A unique puni (camp) experience
The Institute of Awesome provides an incredible environment for students to create a deeper connection with the natural world around them.
At the Institute we have a plan to change the world for good. We host schools & groups like yours who want to join us in this mission. We think that through nature connection, innovation, leadership and a wee bit of technology we can invent the world we want to live in.
CAMP SIZES
We can comfortably cater for groups of up to 60 students (plus adults) at a time. Larger groups can be split Mon-Wed, Wed-Fri.
Our minimum hire is 10 rooms (max. 4 people to a room), which are split across 4 blocks, each with access to bathroom facilities. You can view and get a tour of the rooms on our Facilities page.
CATERING
Fully-catered
We offer full catering for up to 70 people. Our menus are based on seasonally-available kai, and like the seasons, change constantly. There are additional charges for any changes or dietary requirements.
Self-catered
We have all the pots, pans, crockery, and cutlery in our awesome kitchen facilities, to handle hoards of hungry mouths! 3 large ovens with hobs, a big freezer, giant fridges and storage space galore makes self-catering a breeze.

Inspiration Point is our outdoor stage and amphitheatre with the backdrop of the sea, perfect for star gazing or an end of camp production
100 Acres of native bush allow for Bush walks and environmental activities for all levels of outdoor enthusiast
Whale Bay (at the bottom of our driveway) is awesome for low-tide rocky shore exploration, picnics, and flat play spaces (it even has toilets!). You might even spot a surfer or two!
History
The Huntly Karioi Trust initially built the lodge in 1974 as a school camp. Years later and it still retains the essential characteristics that make it an awesome outdoor camp experience. In 2019 the camp was “re-booted” as an enviro-tech camp, blending the old puni kura (school camp) experience with technology learning. Send your school or community group to stay at the lodge, explore the 100 acres of bush on the property and bask in the natural beauty of the Whaaingaroa/Raglan surrounds.
